ISAAC GALVÁN is a Mexican-American visual artist based in Chicago, known for his figurative & representational work. Through painting, drawing & an active sketchbook practice, he employs traditional media to create a rich archive of people, places & figures. By preparing his own substrates, Galván layers wet & dry media onto selected surfaces, infusing his pictures w/an expressive variety of weight & volume. His images remain present while simultaneously fading & dissolving into stain, gesture or bare ground. Throughout his work we can glimpse the portraits of people, the still lifes of ancient sculpture, landscapes echoed by Mesoamerican pyramids & the fleeting image of a figure rendered in the studio. All of Galván’s representations are treated as living monuments, serving as totemic emblems in the sacred passage of time. They remind us of our own mortality & complexity, our capacity for intelligence & beauty, our quiet moments of vulnerability & of the spiritual forces that guide our days.

In these selected studio works, Galván stages encounters between people & the enduring architecture of land, memory & ancestry. Each artwork is both a picture & a record—an intimate scene where observation, process & story are woven together to craft a visual canto. Portraits press psychology against earthy, weathered grounds. Drawings of artifacts & crania read as recovered evidence of ancient lineage. Landscapes & site-specific scenes hold the space where a present gaze meets ancient stone. Sketchbook pages become the altarpieces where skull, hand or body is rendered animate, before receding into the silent chaos of ephemera. Galván’s practice serves as a contemporary call to the past, celebrating classical techniques w/in the context of raw, modern narrativity. His artwork has been featured in art galleries, local museums, private collections & public murals throughout Chicago.
